I enjoyed reading the devotional Jesus Calling by Sarah Young during 2019. It helped me grow stronger in my faith and relationship with Christ. I liked it so much that I wanted to continue reading a devotional during 2020, which turned out to be a good thing given all that’s happened over the past year.
I had noticed during 2019 that my mother was reading the devotional In Moments Like These by Dr. David Jeremiah. She liked it a lot. So much so, that when I told her I wanted to read another devotional in 2020, she bought me a copy. Therefore, my decision on a devotional for 2020 was an easy one.
You get what you expect from a devotional with In Moments Like These. Each passage starts with a bible verse and is followed by a passage that builds on the verse. One of the things I really like about the passages is that they build on the context of the bible verse. In other words, Dr. Jeremiah doesn’t ‘scissor-cut’ verses to support his own message. Instead, his message builds on the context of the verse and applies it to the daily circumstances in our modern lives.
In Moments Like These was a great devotional that built upon what I learned from reading Jesus Calling. Jesus Calling was a great devotional to get me started. As I stated in my review last year, it was a bit like riding a bike with training wheels. It assumed I had a limited spiritual background and guided me down a path to developing a relationship with Christ. In Moments Like These, on the other hand, assumes that you’ve had some exposure to the Word. It helped me build upon and strengthen my relationship with the Lord.
Reading a devotional over the past two years has done wonders for my spiritual growth. I’ve learned a lot from the daily messages, but I’ve grown even more from reading the biblical passages behind the daily verses. I’m looking forward to continuing my spiritual journey and growth during the coming year and plan to continue my devotional readings with Trusting God Day by Day by Joyce Meyer. If you’ve been looking to invest in your spiritual development, I strongly recommend the practice of reading a devotional. If you’re just starting out, Jesus Calling is a great choice. If you already have a foundation that you want to strengthen and build upon, In Moments Like These is a great choice. Either way, you can’t go wrong with either one.
